Stephen EustĂĄquio's stoppage time winner saw Canada beat South Africa 1-0 in the first match of the knockout stage.

With the game closing in on extra time and potentially penalties, the Canada captain volleyed it into the bottom left corner to send the travelling fans in Los Angeles into pandemonium.

In a game that had very little quality from the off, Alphonso Davies' introduction gave Canada the added impetus they needed to begin to take control of the match.

South Africa dominated possession for the vast majority of the match but ultimately failed to create any chances of real note throughout the match.

Fans were frustrated by South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams' time taken on the ball as the tactic to take the game to extra time became more and more apparent.

Time ticked down to the 90th minute and it appeared that they may well get their wish and we would indeed get extra time in the opening knockout match of this World Cup.

But there was then the one moment of quality that the match was desperately crying out for in Los Angeles as EustĂĄquio tucked his effort brilliantly past Williams.

From there, South Africa had no answer and it was Canada who advanced to the round of 16.
