Sheffield Wednesday booked their place in round two of the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win against 10-man Bolton Wanderers.
Substitute Jamal Lowe scored the winner on 70 minutes, just moments after coming on, after collecting a superb pass from Barry Bannan and lifting the ball over goalkeeper Jack Bonham.
In a stop-start first-half, resulting in seven added minutes, Bolton squandered a couple of early chances, with The Owls looking vulnerable on the counter-attack. But the hosts grew into it and had some encouraging attacking moments themselves, but it remained goalless at the break.
Immediately after the re-start, Max Lowe almost connected with a Jordi Liongola cross, and then Harry Gray came close but saw his close-range effort blocked by Bonham.
The visitors had to play the last half an hour with 10-men when Xavier Simons was shown a straight red card by referee Elliot Bell after a needless off-the-ball dig at Gray and Wednesday took advantage when a delightful pass from Bannan found substitute Lowe and he lobbed Bonham with a clever finish.
Wednesday threatened more goals and never looked in danger of conceding as they advanced to round two.
