Daniel Farke on Leeds United excitement and RB Leipzig win but star doubt for start of season

Daniel Farke said it was rightly so if fans were getting excited about his Leeds United side but with a note of caution and bad news Gabi Gudmundsson injury update.

Leeds recorded their third win of an impressive summer through Saturday afternoon’s 2-0 victory against Bundesliga side RB Leipzig which followed victories in America against Sunderland and Liverpool after an opening defeat to Wrexham.

Farke, though, said that Saturday’s triumph against Leipzig actually counted as two wins due to the game consisting of two lots of 60 minutes with virtually a completely different Whites side playing after the break.

Either way, fresh from signing Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic and James Trafford, Leeds are enjoying a fine pre-season and Farke gave his blessing to any fans getting excited about his team whilst readily acknowledging that only the new season itself mattered.

Farke, though, also provided a bad news injury update on star left back Gabi Gudmundsson who was forced off injured against Liverpool last weekend and could now miss the first two games of the new campaign.

Speaking after Saturday’s 2-0 win against RB Leipzig, Farke was presented with the fact that results over the summer could have fans excited by the team.

"Rightly so because we are on a good path,” said Farke.

"But also I am far away from overinterpreting the last games.

"Actually we have had more or less four wins in a row now, against Liverpool and against Sunderland and today more or less in two games against Leipzig and we won both

"But it's just pre-season and not one point is won so far and I am far away from overinterpreting pre-season.

"It's just like to get ready for when the real stuff starts that our only goal and our only target is to be ready when it really starts.

"But we can just judge what we have done so far and so far a few pre-season games and of course hard work on the training pitch and for that I have to give compliments to my players.

"They are looking sharp and ready in the games, especially the last four games where quite impressive and for that we are on a good path but also no further than that."

Asked though for an injury update on Gudmundsson, Farke said: "Bad news with Gabi, a muscle injury.

"Obviously he had a difficult summer anyway because he was just injured before the World Cup and got fit for the World Cup but came back later and right now it's a muscle injury.

"The initial assessment is probably that it could be that he misses the start of the Premier League season.

"At the moment it is to realistic to speak overall about his injury four weeks.

"The first week is right now so nearly done but it could easily be that he missses the first game or the first two games."
