Daniel Farke told which Leeds United transfer to make next after James Trafford coup

The arrival of James Trafford at Leeds United ticks a big box on the club's list of summer transfer objectives.

Ultimately, the search for a new goalkeeper was prompted by the failure of Lucas Perri’s move last year and he is set for a loan switch to Torino this month. But Trafford is a fantastic response to a problem that has blighted Daniel Farke for the last few years.

As a cause of Perri’s imminent exit, though, Leeds are searching for a new back-up goalkeeper. Currently, Alex Cairns - set to play against RB Leipzig on Saturday - is the second choice.

However, for fans who voted in a Leeds Live poll, this is not the next main transfer priority. Indeed out of more than 3,500 voters, just 15% said goalkeeper should be the next port of call.

Leeds are also on the hunt for a cover at left-back, Gabriel Gudmundsson's injury against Liverpool last Sunday highlighting this need. But a smaller 14% feel this is what the club should go after next.

The lowest portion was handed to the option of midfield, with just two per cent putting this as the area they would like the 49ers to focus on next.

Leeds have submitted a final bid for Southampton talent Shea Charles but will not go any higher and Fulham appear keen to pay closer to the reported £30m asking price.

Someone Leeds have definitively lost out on is Julian Brandt, who has joined Ajax despite United holding talks with his agent and father Jurgen last month. A number 10 is still thought to be on the agenda, though just 19% of poll voters put this as the next aim.

Instead, the majority - precisely 50% of voters - chose striker as the next transfer aim. All three of the current centre-forwards scored for Leeds in the tour of the US but that does not paint the context.

There is only so much one can conclude in pre-season but Joel Piroe and, to a lesser but still significant degree, Lukas Nmecha were ineffective at instigating the attacking initiative as a lone striker besides their goals and offered little central thrust.

The drop off between them and Dominic Calvert-Lewin was highlighted by the latter’s 45 minutes against Liverpool, during which he scored twice but also offered more impetus in attack.

Calvert-Lewin missed the first two friendlies after a small setback earlier in pre-season and what transpired reignited the concern about what Leeds would be left with should the main striker be injured for a length of time amid the current back-up options.

And so for many supporters, what Farke must do next in the market, which only has three weeks remaining, is clear.
