Rohl is discussing a move to Austria which would leave club chiefs hunting their third Ibrox boss in less than a year

Another Rangers rebuild looks like it will be led by someone else after the shock news that Danny Rohl could be on his way.

The German is wanted as the new boss of RB Salzburg after just eight months in the Ibrox hotseat.

Rohl was drafted in to fix the mess left by Russell Martin back in October and he managed to get Gers back into a serious title race alongside Hearts and Celtic.

But a post-split collapse saw them banished to third place.

Links to Wolfsburg were dismissed by the man himself earlier this summer, while Union Berlin were also credited with an interest.

But now a switch to Austria could be ON according to reports in his homeland.

Discussions between the two clubs are ongoing, and his departure would leave the Light Blues' American owners looking for their third manager since taking the reins a year ago.

All while trying to build a squad able to compete at home and on the continent while avoiding the now familiar late season slump that fans are fed up of.

Seems they just don't do quiet summers.

We'll have all the latest on the developing situation LIVE on the blog.

And it seems likely that he will be allowed to talk to Salzburg once a compensation figure has been agreed.

EXCLUSIVE! Rohl waits on Rangers future decision

Danny Rohl is waiting for Rangers to make a decision on his future.

The Ibrox side are currently in talks with Red Bull Salzburg over their boss after the Austrian side have made the German their top managerial target.

Rohl has just returned from holiday in the past 24 hours and has been informed of the discussions between the two clubs.

Record Sport understands the 37-year-old is now waiting for them to come to a conclusion - to see if Rangers will allow him to speak to Red Bull or if they will decide to keep him in post at Ibrox.

Klopp breaks over

Jurgen Klopp is reportedly playing a key role in RB Salzburg's push to appoint Danny Rohl.

Amid the rife speculation about the Rangers manager, Klopp has spoken publicly for the first time since the news broke, with the Liverpool and Dortmund icon on punditry duty for German television last night in the World Cup opener between Mexico and South Africa.

And it's fair to say the Premier League and Champions League winner was far from impressed by Bafana Bafana and the game as a whole.

Speaking alongside former legendary Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller on MagentaTV, he said:

They (South Africa) didn't do enough. They didn't manage to even begin to show what they intended to do. There simply wasn't enough. Add to that two red cards, it was a very bad day. That (Mexico red card) sums up the whole game. Tactically, it was simply poor, not good from either team. If Mexico hadn't gone for it, they would have been in real trouble. They would have had more problems than they did today. You have to be much more compact than both teams were. The gaps between the player in the challenge and the next one who could intervene were always too large.

Rangers chief drops in on Scotland amid Rohl uncertainty

Andrew Cavenagh was the one being searched as he dropped in on Scotland training in Foxborough ahead of the massive World Cup Group C clash against Haiti.

But he could be on the search soon if Danny Rohl decides he fancies taking charge of RB Salzburg.

The German has emerged as the Ausrian outfit's first choice to become their knew head coach, with Jurgen Klopp pushing for the Gers boss' appointment.

With the Ibrox chairman on the other side of the Atlantic while his manager's future is up in the air, you have to assuem the American is fairly relaxed about the situation as it stands.

But with Rohl's squad due to report back for pre-season training on June 22, there will be little time to get a new man in should a third new manager of the 39ers Enterprises tenure be needed.

From contract clauses to replacements

Here is everything you need to know so far about Danny Rohl and interest from RB Salzburg.

Everything you need to know about Danny Rohl to Salzburg from Rangers contract clause to replacements

Time to 'heal' for Stevie G?

Fans are hoping there is a quick resolution - and Steven Gerrard could present a quick-fire replacement for Rohl, should he join Salzburg.

The Liverpool icon is the last man to bring a title to Govan - but has had a rough time since leaving Rangers. He guided the club to an unbeaten league campaign and a first crown in 10 years during the 2020/2021 season before leaving for Aston Villa.

He lasted just 11 months in the Premier League hot seat and his attempt to kickstart his career the Saudi Pro League fell flat after leaving Al-Ettifaq.

He held talks with the American owners before a deal collapsed - but a confession to Graeme Souness could offer a major clue about the chances of Gerrard replacing the German.

Speaking to Souness following his sacking at Villa Park, the Ibrox icon said Gerrard told him a return could be on the cards if the relationship with the supporters was given time to heal.

He told talkSPORT in 2022: "I saw Steven a couple of weeks ago in Portugal. He seemed in fine form and I said to him: 'are you wanting to go back?' and he said give it a bit of time and I'll go back if something comes along that is interesting to him."

Derek McInnes sent Rangers SOS

The punters are getting worried - and one name has emerged to keep the pre-season plans on track.

Salzburg chief breaks cover

Salzburg sporting director Marcus Mann has broken cover amid links with Danny Rohl - to kickstart the club’s transfer plans this summer.

Dominik Schmid has moved from Basel to Salzburg - amid the ongoing talks over Rohl.

The German boss could take over the Austrian side as talks over compensation continue with the Light Blues.

And the first summer signing has already been made.

Mann said:

With Dominik Schmid, we have brought in a player with a wealth of experience and footballing quality. We already got a first impression of him in the Europa League match against Basel last January, where he impressed with his attacking style and defensive stability. He is a potential leader, which will also benefit our many young talents in the team.

What has Derek McInnes said about Rangers?

He has previously turned down the job - but just last season the Hearts boss was asked about the hot seat.

With the Jambos top of the league after eight games and the Light Blues search for Russell Martin's replacement in October, McInnes said:

I think any time a manager's team is doing well, and the team is doing well, there's always sometimes people talking you up and maybe some speculation from that," McInnes said. The flip side of that as a manager is you're normally batting off questions about your job when things aren't going well. We're just concentrating on trying to maintain our strong start - and it is just a start. But we're really enjoying what we're doing and really enjoying what we're getting from the players. We're only talking about Hearts, trying to stay top of the league, taking the good from the last-minute derby winner, and now concentrating on the next challenge.

Danny Rohl sceptics have answer

Our man Andy Newport knows the feeling from the punters about the boss, but what does it mean going forward?

Rohl's exit timeline

The German boss will report back next Monday to lead pre-season as it stands - with Record Sport understanding Andrew Cavenagh is keep to find a resolution quickly to Salzburg's interest.

Even if that means the boss leaving.

However, The Sun note that Rohl is in no rush to leave and could still be in charge when some of the squad return next week.

49ers link?

Scott McDermott reckons Rangers would have known Danny Rohl was on Salzburg’s shortlist BEFORE talks began.

The Record Sport man notes the links between Red Bull and 49ers Enterprises - with the drinks giant holding a minority ownership stake in Leeds alongside the NFL giants.

He told Hotline Live:

I don’t believe for a minute that Red Bull Salzburg have made this interest know in the last 48 hours. This is an organisation that have close links to Leeds United, and close links to Rangers via 49ers Enterprises. They must have known there was interest there, and must have known he was on a list of potential managerial candidates.

Why Jurgen Klopp wants Danny Rohl

The Liverpool legend and Salzburg kingmaker Klopp is pushing for Rohl - and reports in Germany suggest there is a "clear" reason.

The footballing philosophy of Rohl and his proven track record of developing young talent are said to have caught the German's attention.

It is said by Goal "hese attributes are considered essential for the Salzburg role."

Compensation central to Rohl talks

RB Salzburg will first have to agree compensation with Rangers before talks can commence with Danny Rohl.

And Sky Sports are reporting they're still some way away from that – and have other options on the table.

We understand Rohl isn't pushing for an exit yet with Salzburg still yet to make a firm move to pry the German away.

Sky report that Rangers' compensation expectations are the first hurdle and Salzburg are yet to meet it.

There is no release clause in Rohl's contract so should Rangers decide to fight to keep their boss, they can name their price – he is under contract until at least 2028.

Salzburg's first formal offer could decide how talks progress from here.

Where does Kevin Muscat stand?

He was also in the running for the job before Danny Rohl was named as boss - but what has he said on the job?

When asked about the collapsed talks, the Shanghai Port boss said:

I had some real positive talks with some really good people, real professional people. I’ve got a lot of respect for the people that I spoke with. The decision ended up where it ended up.

He would lead the club to the Chinese title - but this term things have been very different.

Port were hit with a point deduction and have been floundering in mid-table as the club attempt to cut costs.

Muscat's contract will expire at the end of the current Chinese Super League season.

Gers push for quickfire Rohl conclusion

Rangers are weighing up RB Salzburg’s bombshell bid to take boss Danny Rohl off their hands.

The Austrian giants have targeted the Ibrox gaffer after sacking Daniel Beichler.

And sources in Germany claim they have already made contact with Gers chiefs as they push hard to strike a shock deal for the 37-year-old.

But it leaves chairman Andrew Cavenagh with a huge decision to make just weeks after throwing his support behind the under-fire boss following the dramatic collapse of the club’s title bid.

Danny Rohl's exit stance

Salzburg are keen - but report suggest that Danny Rohl is in no rush to leave Ibrox.

The clubs are in talks over a potential deal, but the Rangers Review report Rohl is not pushing to leave Rangers ahead of the return to pre-season training next week.

Steven Gerrard stance on return

Steven Gerrard has conceded he is “maybe” open to a management return.

The title-winning Ibrox boss immediately rocketed to the top of bookmakers odds to replace Danny Rohl - should he leave for Salzburg.

Gerrard previously held talks over a return before Rohl’s appointment - but would pull out after talks with the club’s American owners.

Speaking on TNT Sports during the Champions League final between Arsenal and PSG, he was asked about getting back into the dugout - with Burnley also mentioned as a potential destination.

He said:

Who knows? You never shut a door. I’m enjoying my work-life balance. Coaching is tough, it’s challenging. I’ve had some real big opportunities and I enjoyed a lot of it, but at the moment...family time, TNT, doing some other bits around what I do, travelling, I’m really happy at the moment. I’m getting lots of time with my kids, which I’ve missed while I have been coaching, so at the moment I would say maybe.

Klopp leads Salzburg push with trump card

Red Bull's head of global soccer Jurgen Klopp brought Rangers boss Danny Rohl into the conversation for their next boss.

And he has a trump card ready to play to seal the switch.

Cameron Menzies shuts down Gerrard return chances

Darts star Cameron Menzies reckons the ship has sailed on Steven Gerrard returning to Rangers – even if he'd love to see it.

World No.29 Menzies will team up with Gary Anderson at this year's World Cup of Darts, having overtaken Peter Wright in the PDC rankings.

Speaking to BetVictor, he was asked about the situation at his beloved Rangers – and doesn't fancy their chances of luring Gerrard back this time around.

Steven Gerrard back at Rangers? I like to see it but that boat has sailed. There have been two or three chances for him to come back and it hasn’t happened. It was just the way they played football. Since he left it has got worse and worse and been a downward spiral since and a difficult few years, but that’s just football.

Runners and riders

With Danny Rohl seemingly heading for the Ibrox exit door, Rangers fans will already be speculating about who could suceed him.

The likes of Steven Gerrard, Derek McInnes, Kevin Muscat and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will once again come under the microscope after one or two close shaves with the top job at Ibrox in the past.

Or could the club opt for a totally different appointment by targeting someone like Liam Rosenior?

There is certainly a lot to ponder if Rohl is going to call it quits after just 234 days in the hotseat.

Rohl set for Klopp link-up

Moving to RB Salzburg will see Danny Rohl come under the umbrella of the Red Bull football operation headed by Jurgen Klopp.

The iconic former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund was appointed as the company's Head of Global Soccer in October 2024, overseeing the strategy and decision making at Red Bull's four primary football clubs and partnerships at a further three teams.

It begs the question: has the Premier League and Champions League winner had any involvement in Salzburg's pursuit of his compatriot, Rohl?

Danny Rohl's Gers record

Here is the German's full record as Ibrox boss across all competitions.

Played: 40

Won: 22

Drawn: 8

Lost: 11

Marcus Mann's long term plan

The RB Salzburg sporting managing director was only officially appointed in March.

He;s the man that;s identified Danny Rohl as an ideal replacement for Daniel Biechler.

And here's what he ad to say after his appointment

Up to now, I have always stayed with my clubs for a long time, always identifying strongly with them, and I am therefore convinced that this will also be the case here. It simply takes time to develop things. Not everything always works out on the second day. I want to be an important part of steering the club back to successful times with hard work and commitment.

Revolving door set to swing again

If Danny Rohl does call it quits at Rangers, the club will be forced to search for a new manager for the eighth time in the last nine years

The first of those permanent appointments came with the arrival of Pedro Caixinha back in March 2017, and he has since been followed by Steven Gerrard, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale, Philippe Clement, Russell Martin and Rohl.

And it's fair to say those bosses all had contrasting fortunes in the hot seat at Ibrox.

Will ongoing Gers transfer hunt be affected?

Rangers have already signed Lawrence Shankland this summer.

But could Danny Rohl's exit halt other business that the club are planning to do?

Gers have been linked with a whole host of names, with Record Sport confirming that Westerlo's US international full back Bryan Westero is on their radar.

Swedish duo Casper Widell and Hampus Skoglund are among the other players said to be in the sights of Ibrox transfer chiefs.

No 'release clause' for Rohl

Danny Rohl's' contract at Rangers does NOT contain a release clause that would allow other clubs to proceed directly to talks with the Ibrox boss if they meet a certain fee.

That's according to talkSPORT, who also report that talks between Gers and RB Salzburg are ongoing.

Could Muscat come back into the frame?

It looked for all the world that Rangers were set to appoint Kevin Muscat as their new manager last October, only for a deal with the Shanghai Port boss to fall apart at the 11th hour.

And with Rohl potentially on his way to the continent, could Gers revisit an approach for their former midfielder?

The Aussie has enjoyed great success as a manager in Asia, lifting multiple trophies with Shangai, as well as Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan and Melbourne Victory in the A-League.

Rohl exit talk flies in the face of Cavenagh backing

At the end of last season, Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh threw his full support behind Danny Rohl, despite Gers collapse in the Premiership title race and wide condemnation of the German from the Ibrox fanbase.

He said:

As we look to next year, Danny is our coach. We believe that Danny gives us the best chance to win the league next year. There are two key elements that he needs to succeed. That would be a revamped squad, which is probably the most important - and a pre-season. We look at our squad and say we have a bunch of good players. We have a good squad, and we've proven that in fits and spurts throughout the season. But we don't yet have a good team. And that is our focus this summer, building a winning team. Our focus will be less about raw talent and more about things like chemistry, leadership, steel and footballing IQ. We are excited to make those adjustments to the squad. We think Danny is a really good coach. We've seen that throughout the year. He's not perfect. But when you think about what it takes to win, we think the most important change we need to make is the squad. And with an improved squad, we think Danny will bring titles. We recognise that supporting any club, but certainly Rangers, is an emotional roller-coaster. We completely understand that view on a personal level. We go through that same roller-coaster. But our job, as those who run this club, is to not let it go on that roller-coaster ride. We need to be even-keeled and ensure that, step by step - and it's not always a straight line - we move this club towards success. We believe that Dan is part of that.
