Frankie Dettori was taken to hospital after his car flipped over in a crash.
The 55-year-old was driving when he was struck by another vehicle in Newmarket, Suffolk, on Wednesday.
H Talent Management, his representatives, confirmed in a statement that âanother vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car Frankie was driving, causing it to spin and flipâ.
The statement adds: âFrankie was taken to hospital, where he was found to have sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb. His injuries are still being assessed, and he remains in hospital for further scans and observation.
âFrankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him. His focus is now on resting and recovering. H Talent Management respectfully asks that Frankieâs privacy is respected at this time. No further comment will be made until there is a meaningful update.â
Eyewitnesses told The Sun the crash also involved a motorbike. There were marks showing where a car had skidded at the site on Thursday. Police confirmed they were called to a collision â but no arrests were made.
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: âWe were called at about 7pm yesterday [July 1] to the A1304, London Road, near Six Mile Bottom, after reports of a collision between a car and a motorbike.â
The crash comes less than a week after Dettori confirmed he would have his first ride in Britain since 2023, having been signed up for this yearâs Leger Legends race at Doncaster in September. He had finally hung up his boots in February after taking some rides in Brazil following a spell in the United States.
It has been a tumultuous year for Dettori, who has recently endured financial woes. A company he set up is suspected by HM Revenue & Customs of having been âutilised for the purpose of tax avoidanceâ, it emerged in January.
HMRC âraised significant concernsâ that Frankie Dettori Limited and âassociated companyâ Newmarket Activities Limited were involved in dodging tax prior to being voluntarily liquidated, according to documents filed with Companies House. Both companies were wound up on October 21, 2024, owing HMRC ÂŁ765,542 and ÂŁ765,774, respectively, sums that liquidatorsâ reports covering the subsequent year state are ânot expectedâ to be repaid because of âinsufficient fundsâ.
Dettoriâs first day in his new post-retirement job as global ambassador for Amo Racing came at Doncaster in March.
Dettori previously had a lucky escape in 2000 when his private plane caught fire in Newmarket. Dettori was pulled from the wreckage by friend Ray Cochrane, but pilot Patrick Mackey was killed.
