Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital in Mexico City and faces an anxious wait to see if his World Cup is over after suffering a freak injury.
Henderson badly hurt his wrist falling over the advertising boards after England had celebrated their 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico.
Thomas Tuchel, the England head coach, admitted the incident took some shine off a famous win and Henderson will remain in Mexico City and will not return to Kansas with the rest of the squad.
âMy emotions are very mixed,â Tuchel said. âIâm just proud, but mixed feelings also, because I am exhausted, of course, and emotional but also sad because Jordan got injured.
âHe injured his wrist. He is at the moment at the hospital, so it is quite a serious injury. It just doesnât fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I donât know the procedure, or what is going on. I just did the press and the doctor told me heâs in hospital.â
As a rendition of Wonderwall ended, Henderson landed badly on his arm, which meant he had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher with oxygen required.
England physios sprinted to the technical area to grab equipment to treat Henderson, who was next to the goal near the away end, then paramedics carried the Brentford midfielder to the dressing room on a stretcher.
âNot good,â Tuchel said. âNot good. We have a defender now with a red card and Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It is really bad.â
Harry Kane, the England captain, was the first to confirm that Henderson sustained an injury of sorts, saying: âHendo just fell over there. It was a crazy game, we had to fight. We had to find something. I have just been singing there and I cannot really talk.
âEverything was against us, but we found a way. I thought I got to the ball first, but it was one of those days where the ref gave a lot against us. In the end it did not matter. Iâm happy.â
