Manchester United have been handed potentially a fresh injury blow after an update on Manuel Ugarte emerges. Ugarte was stretchered off during Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in their final Group H clash at the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The United midfielder was in clear distress with what is suspected to be a knee injury following a collision shortly before Spain took the lead in the first half in Zapopan, with Alex Baena on the score sheet for Luis de la Fuente’s side.

It remains to be seen how serious the injury suffered by Ugarte is, with United facing a nervous wait to discover how long the 25-year-old could be unavailable for selection while he’s in recovery.

There had been a growing expectation that Ugarte could head for the exit door at Old Trafford this summer, but that now remains unclear, with the midfielder now seemingly expected to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Sun have reported that Ugarte was spotted in a wheelchair as he left the Estadio Akron, with his left leg covered.

The Uruguay FA have yet to confirm how serious Ugarte’s injury is, with an update expected in due course.

Journalist Rodri Vazquez has claimed that Ugarte underwent tests on his knee injury on Saturday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and it is expected to be confirmed that the United star has suffered a cruciate ligament injury.

Ugarte endured a difficult season at United and went into the World Cup hoping to play a key role for Uruguay in the tournament.

However, Uruguay were knocked out of the World Cup after the defeat to Spain, and Ugarte will now return to England to assess his next steps after his injury.

Ugarte is reported to have been a player of interest to clubs in Serie A, and now a potential move this summer may be in doubt after the latest injury blow.

United are expected to have a busy summer transfer window, particularly in midfield, where several names have been linked with moves to Old Trafford.

Atalanta star Ederson has agreed to move to United, with the Reds reaching an agreement to sign the Brazilian for an initial fee worth ÂŁ35million plus ÂŁ3.8million more in add-ons.

West Ham star Mateus Fernandes has also been heavily linked with a move to United this summer, and it now remains to be seen if the Reds’ transfer plans will be affected by the impact of Ugarte’s injury.
