The Bolton boss was pleased with some of the chances that were created with the game still goalless, but once his side were reduced to 10 men, Jamal Lowe was able to nudge the Owls into the second round with a well-taken finish with 20 minutes remaining.

Speaking after the game, Schumacher said he was more upset that the chances had not been converted into goals.

"I'm disappointed to lose the tie, especially in the manner that we did," he said.

"I felt we were the better team, much the better team, up until the red card, so it's had a massive impact on the game.

"We had three big chances in the first half where we should be out of sight, so that's on us to be more clinical with the opportunities that we said to the players would be there if we play as well as we did."

On Simons' red card, given for lashing out at Harry Gray after the Wednesday attacker had pulled his shirt, Schumacher said the reaction had been quite out of character.

"From the angle I've seen it from this side, it looks like Xav has reacted and lashed out, which he knows you can't do, it's a poor decision, and it's a decision that you wouldn't expect from him," he said.

"It's the first time I've seen him do that since he's been here, and I'm sure he'll be disappointed with it.

"There was a lot of positives to take from the game, more positives than negatives, certainly for the hour when it was 11 v 11 we were really good, even when we went to 10 men we looked organised and strong.

"We had a big chance at 0-0 when Larra (Gaizka Larrizabal) and Sam (Dalby) broke through, and we should be better at that moment, so these are the opportunities that we always seem to create, as I say we get the organisation and the plan right, we always get into these areas and create opportunities, but we need to be better at taking them.

"I'm more positive with how we've played, just disappointed to be out of the tie, but I suppose if you're looking on the bright side we don't have a mid-week fixture for whenever it was going to be so we'll just concentrate on the league for now."

Wanderers will also keep an eye on a couple of players who picked up minor injury problems in the second half.

"Ruben (Rodrigues) took a bang on his knee, Thierry rolled his ankle but obviously continued, and there were just a few bumps and bruises.

"I thought fatigue was a bit of an element, two centre-backs looking as though they had cramp, so again first game of the season, hot conditions, probably to be expected at this stage but again something we're going to have to get better at, the physicality because we have to step it up.

"Eoin Toal got some minutes.

"Larra did well, I thought, he lasted 60 minutes, which was the plan.

"There were loads of positives to say, loads of good performances.

"Kiliane did okay, looked lively and sharp when he came on, Thierry was a real positive today, he was a threat all afternoon, so as I say I'm happy enough with what happened, I'm just disappointed to lose the game in the manner that we did, not just from the red card element but it should have been over really."
