Manchester United completed their Scandinavian pre-season tour with a creditable 1-1 draw against European champions Paris Saint-Germain, giving Michael Carrick plenty to smile about with two weeks to go until the Premier League returns.
The Red Devils still have friendlies against Leeds United in Dublin and AC Milan in Wroclaw to play before they kick off their 2026/27 campaign against Hull City live on TNT Sports and HBO Max, but the draw against the Parisiens was enough to convince Carrick that his side are on the right track as competitive football approaches.
PSG scored with their first attack of the game but Amad and Bryan Mbeumo linked up to create an equaliser after half-time and Carrickâs side outshot their opponents 12-5 (7-3 on target), with the head coach's only full-time regret being that they could not turn one of those opportunities into the winning goal.
âI enjoyed it, I thought there were good things to take from the game,â Carrick told MUTV. âWe shouldâve scored more goals, I thought we pressed particularly well at times, won the ball back higher up the pitch and looked really dangerous on transition which is kind of what we have done really for the last few months.
âIt was good to see, and some of the football against man-to-man, the boys adapted really well. So there was a lot of positives from the game, I enjoyed it.
âIâm looking forward to it [Dublin], itâs been a little bit of different chapters through pre-season but to get everybody together and when we get to Dublin over the next couple of days, two more games this coming week, and I am looking forward to seeing the group develop.
âToday, the boys coming off the bench added that extra bit of quality coming back from the World Cup. They are top, top players and it was nice to have them back. We get more back next week so we are in a good place."
Bruno Fernandes, Noussair Mazraoui, Diogo Dalot and Youri Tielemans all played their first pre-season minutes following their post-World Cup breaks, with the latter earning plenty of plaudits alongside fellow new signing Andrey Santos in midfield.
Tielemans completed 100% of his passes and made nine carries in 28 minutes against PSG after replacing Mason Mount, who took a knock but was walking freely on the sidelines post-game, while Santos had a 95% pass accuracy rate and made more defensive contributions than any other player on the pitch in the first half.
Mbeumo and Amad combined for what United fans will hope is the first of many goals this season - with the Ivorian looking sharp all game - and Harry Maguire was a rock in defence which proved especially valuable when Tom Heaton was withdrawn as a precaution meaning Dermot Mee played most of the second half in goal.

There was certainly a gap in the relative strength of each team in Gothenburg; only three of PSGâs starting XI from the 2026 UEFA Champions League final were involved from the off against United - though Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and Joao Neves each played half an hour - while seven of the starting Red Devils in Gothenburg also lined up against Brighton in their final Premier League match last season.

However, Carrick still has big names of his own to welcome back in the form of Matheus Cunha, Lisandro Martinez, Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo.
Rashford has not started for his boyhood club since January 2025 but Amadâs post-match comments confirmed his team-mates are looking forward to working with him once again.
âA good game, we knew PSG are good,â Amad told MUTV, per the Manchester Evening News. âAll about fitness, that's why we are here. For me, pre-season has been good. We need to keep going, try and win games.
"It was a good game, we knew how tough they are to beat. It is exciting to have Bruno, Mazraoui and other players.
âNow we need Rashford, Kobbie and it is exciting. We have two more games against Leeds and Milan, we need to get our fitness and hopefully we can win a trophy this season.â
