Why Ronald Araujo Was Allowed to Join Liverpool

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has offered an honest assessment of Ronald Araujo’s imminent move to Liverpool, explaining the defender’s style did not fit his system.

Liverpool have opted for an initial loan deal to bolster their defensive ranks for the upcoming season, making an unexpected move for Barcelona‘s captain.

Araujo made 38 appearances for Flick’s side last season and took on the armband in January, and was not anticipated to be on Liverpool’s radar.

Speaking openly about Araujo’s departure, Flick praised the defender’s character while conceding tactical differences and previous mistakes meant a change is welcomed.

“I think Ronald is a great guy and a great player, but our style of play is different from what he prefers,” Flick told reporters, via Diario AS.

“He’s a powerful and fast player. It’s a shame for me; it’s been difficult, and I haven’t been able to count on him as much as I would have liked.

“Past mistakes affected him mentally. I’ve seen him happy, and I wish him all the best.

“He’s a fantastic person and player, and a great captain. Changes in life are normal.”

High-profile mistakes and personal struggles saw Araujo granted a six-week leave of absence to “take care of himself emotionally,” beginning at the end of last year and into early 2026.

Moreover, Flick’s high defensive line and emphasis on line-breaking distribution led to others being prioritised, leaving Araujo with limited opportunities.

Thus, the opportunity for a change in scenery is seen as a chance to press the reset button, and Andoni Iraola will hope to build his confidence and nurture him back to top form.

Araujo has played 213 times for Barcelona‘s senior side, with his previous experience coming with Rentistas and Boston River in his native Uruguay.

Liverpool can make his deal permanent for €55 million (£47.1m), but they do not have an obligation to retain the 27-year-old beyond the season.
