Wigan Warriors suffered a double injury blow in their win over Hull FC regarding experienced prop Luke Thompson and captain Liam Farrell, while youngster Noah Hodkinson passed his head injury assessment.
The Cherry and Whites made it eight victories from their last nine outings as they came from behind to win 20-16 and clinch the two points in humid conditions at the MKM Stadium.
However, the win came at a cost. Wigan lost skipper Farrell inside the opening 10 minutes with a shoulder injury, while key prop Thompson also left the action midway through the first half and didnât return as he was assisted from the field with a foot injury.
The Warriors also lost young winger Hodkinson to a head injury assessment in the closing stages, which he passed, meaning he will be able to face St Helens at Magic Weekend on Sunday.
âNoah passed his HIA,â said coach Matt Peet. âThe other two, I donât know much detail, but Iâd imagine knowing them and their body awareness, thereâll be something there when they get checked out.â
The aforementioned injury blows meant that Peet had to shuffle his team around several times during the game, with the likes of Ollie Partington, Kaide Ellis and Brad OâNeill producing huge performances in 30-degree heat.
âThere were people swapping round,â said Peet. âThose games come, hectic in the heat, theyâre really enjoyable wins, those, and you learn a lot about your group.
âI think every coach would say the same about those wins, Warrington had one the other night, and weâve had one today. Thereâll be things you back at on video, and youâre trying to dissect, but the video doesnât really do it justice because it doesnât quantify the heat, the crowd and the pressure from the way the game was.â
Meanwhile, star man Bevan French made his first start since returning from a three-month injury lay-off, having featured from the bench in his previous three outings, producing two assists in the comeback win over Hull.
âI thought he did really well, and I just thought he needed to get a start under his belt,â Peet said.
âIt wasnât anything around Jack (Farrmond) - Jackâs been outstanding - and the process of bringing him on at a certain time has worked really well and I think itâs something weâll do again.
âBut I think Bevan was at that stage where he needed to go through a tough game and a tough start, and thatâs exactly what he got.â
