Cesar Peixoto has praised Wolvesâ mentality as they opened their 2026/27 account with a Carabao Cup win over Port Vale.
First half goals from Adam Armstrong, Andre and Fer Lopez sealed the victory, despite Wolves handing chances to the visitors at the other end.
The head coach was pleased with Wolvesâ winning start, but has a keen eye on improving his side.
Peixoto said: âI like the mentality the players put in the game. I like to score three goals, I like not conceding any goals again.
âThereâs a lot to improve for the team. I think it's important we look at the game, analyse the game and see things to improve because at this time of the season it's normal.
âWe committed some mistakes but we want to improve the team a lot.â
A lot of that improvement must come in defence, as Port Vale created enough chances to score at least two goals in the first half.
The visitors hit the crossbar early on following a scramble in the box, while Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel later missed a sitter from a matter of yards after Toti Gomes lost an aerial dual to Mo Faal and Yerson Mosquera lost his marker.
Peixoto admits the team have to adjust defensively and when asked how he will fix that issue, the head coach added: âThe team have to, when the ball goes longer, have to go deeper, compact and all together, not only the first defensive line or the two midfielders.
âThe wingers and the two men on the front have to come, travel with the ball, so the team stays compact all the time.
âI think sometimes we lost the second ball because of that, it's a thing you have to improve for the Championship because it's important.
âBut it's normal in this time of the season, you have a lot to improve, you have to work hard to put the team in a better level.â
One area that Wolves did look threatening, however, was at set pieces.
Andreâs goal came from a short corner routine, a good delivery from Kieran Trippier and a strong header back across goal from Mosquera.
Wolves could also have added to their tally through other set pieces, while Mosquera came close with a header from a corner.
Peixoto was pleased with the teamâs understanding in those situations, following work on the training pitch.
On set pieces, Peixoto said: âI also like that because we worked in the week to put it in the game and today and in the last game also, the team understood the right time and space to attack the ball, the right movement to attack the ball and today we saw a lot of new things.
âWe analysed the opponent team and put it in the pitch in the week to do it in the games and I also like this moment of the game, it's important for us.â
Wolves will now prepare for their first Championship fixture of the season, as Blackburn come to Molineux on Friday night.
